Martin Stringer, lead vocals and guitar, has the Irish talent for words and a keen sense of melody. His compositions are always catchy, memorable tunes; the lyrics honest but hopeful. Martin's experience in the music business shows through. It is on stage where his true colours of raconteur and showman come to life.
Jeff Davis, mandolin and vocals, is a player of distinction. He is the subject of probably the strangest crossover from one musical style to another. With considerable success in the late seventies/early eighties during the Punk music boom, he has now returned to his Celtic roots. His tunes are lively, danceable pieces, based on widely varying styles from traditional Celtic Folk to the compositions of Aaron Copland. When you hear his song, Bordeux, you'll get an idea of the other "dark-like-the-moon" side of him.
And then comes the latest recruit Andy Leaney, who took over from John in the UK when he upped sticks and went to live stateside. Once described as a legend in his own lunchtime Andy has played in numerous bands over far too many years in a variety of styles and his contribution has taken the band in directions that were never expected.
And when we tour in the USA we are joined by John S. Laidlaw. on guitar and vocals. His career began by playing electric rock and blues. Then he rediscovered his folk/acoustic side in both solo performance and band work. He now tends toward the reflective and more complex, but some have described him as lyrical and jazzy. Odd, considering where he started.
New Music in the Celtic Tradition
Rude Knot To, are a Celtic Folk band. It is a great band to be a part of. Odd, but great. The more we work together, the better the music gets. We're writing and playing stuff now that we wouldn't have dreamed of attempting when we started, and yet it just gets easier and easier. Lots more to come as Jeff says.
Rude Knot To is a folk-influenced band from Hastings, in Sussex, England. Strongly influenced by our Celtic and Gaelic backgrounds, we have merged the styles and intents of Folk - traditional and contemporary - Blues, Rock and the occasional tiny bit of Country.
We have released four albums to date under our own label; Testing the Water, Coping With Silence - a multi-faceted gem according to the review, Distant Lands. and the very latest - Eat Well Keep Fit Die Anyway.
All show a wide variety of styles and songwriting.
The band excels at live gigs. We are energetic [well we try to be!!] performers and always give the crowd a show to remember. Irreverent though we may be, we always involve the audience in our shows. Metaphorically speaking, we're the friends you invite in who tell jokes, drink your beer, make fun of your dog, and entertain with music until morning.
Like at a recent gig, we started the set with older songs, primarily from our first recording, Testing the Water. It trucked along nicely and then we did Jeff's instrumental, Superman. At this point we shifted up by at least three gears, injected some nitrous oxide and turned on the water-cooling. The crowd responded in kind. We finished with two encores, numbed fingers and several pints of nice drinkies waiting at the bar for us. Lovely.
